Summer Housing

In April 2017, Summer Foundation formed a not-for-profit sister organisation, Summer Housing, to provide quality, bespoke SDA housing options for people with disability living in, or at risk of admission to, residential aged care (particularly younger people).

Summer Housing’s model has now grown into a more scalable model with design and technology specific for people with disability that enables independence and community inclusion. Their current model is to ‘salt and pepper’ ten SDA apartments within an apartment complex built to High Physical Support and Fully Accessible specifications, with an additional unmodified apartment for an office to provide 24 hour onsite overnight assistance to tenants. Its goal was to commission 300 SDA Dwellings for people with disability, which was reached in January 2020.

Youngcare

Youngcare is a national not-for-profit, that is addressing the issue of young people with severe physical disabilities, living in inappropriate housing, such as aged care, long stay hospital and rehabilitation centres. It was established in 2005 and the inspiration for its foundation came after the wife of one of the founders, developed multiple sclerosis at a young age and was forced to live in aged care, as it was the only place that could provide for her 24/7 care needs.

Today, Youngcare builds homes for young people with complex supports needs, it funds much needed Grants programs to keep young people from entering inappropriate accommodation, it provides a phone support line helping people navigate the disability and NDIS sector and it is an advocate for change in government policy and in communities.

MySAS has partnered with Youngcare to access and understand its knowledge and experience, in providing a positive impact for people with high care needs, from its shared housing model. Together MYSAS and Youngcare have a network of developers, architects, planners and builders, to deliver quality housing for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) tenants.

With Youngcare’s guidance, MySAS will provide young people with severe physical disabilities with choice, dignity and control via its SDA housing, across the country.
